AHL to Austin, TX?......

Hicks Sports Group - owner of the NHL's Dallas Stars - has announced plans to co-develop a 6,800-seat multi-purpose arena in Cedar Park, Texas, a suburb of Austin. The facility would become home to a new American Hockey League franchise - the Texas Stars - in time for the 2010 season.

As a result, it would appear that Iowa Stars owners Robert Schlegel and Howard Baldwin will be looking for a new parent-club. Further, ownership of the Central Hockey League's Austin Ice Bats contend that they will not vacate the market, raising the prospect of two minor-league ice hockey teams battling for fans in Austin.

What makes the AHL think they can get enough people to the games. The Austin Ice Bats (CHL) at the bottom of attandence in the league and an AHL team would need a lot more to make it.

Anyone who does business with Hicks Sports Group needs to be aware that they HAVE defaulted on debt in the past.

Their "partners" need to watch their backs or they'll be left holding the bag while Hicks defaults and buys another sports team somewhere else.

I posted it here due to the Stars' affiliation shift between Iowa and Austin. If the shirt weren't taking place, Iowa wouldn't have sought a new name.
