This sucks. The CHL won't be the same without the Flamers.

It is going to be hard for the Thunder on "Fill the House Night" with Rapid City in town.lol

The writing was on the wall for this for a while now, still sucks to lose one of the original six.

I wonder how AHL hockey will go over in OKC.

Al?

I really don't understand this move at all. I know OKC has been really serious about this AHL thing for a while. But, why suspend operating while it's being negotiated? It is possible to do both.

I sure hate to see the Blazers go. Man, it's tough to lose one of the original six CHL franchises.

This is what is being said for now. I for one believe nothing that comes from the Blazers front office. It's all been bullshit so far about this.

The Oklahoma City Blazers have suspended operations after failing to renew their lease with Oklahoma City to play in the Ford Center or Incomparable Myriad, a team official said Thursday.
The decision comes as Oklahoma City officials have filed paperwork clearing the way to start negotiations with “a prospective AHL franchise afflilated with Express Sports,” according to city documents.
The city council is scheduled to vote Tuesday to approve a “Letter of Intent” between the city and AHL Hockey Club, LLC.
The Blazers did not renew their lease with the Ford Center after months of negotiations. According to city documents, the city and SMG were going to grant the Blazers a three-year renewal, but the Blazers have retracted the deal.
Blazers assistant general manager Josh Evans said it was purely a business decision and said the city and SMG were very accommodating in the process.
“It is not economically feasible for us to go on at this point,” Evans said. “We will evaluate our business and move on from there.”
The Blazers organization informed the CHL on Wednesday about the decision. All the players from last year’s team will now be free agents and can sign with any team they choose.
The Edmonton Oilers of the NHL own a dormant AHL franchise and there have been discussions in recent month about relocating that team to Oklahoma City.
The decision to suspend operations ends the Blazers’ 17-season run in Oklahoma City, a successful tenure that saw them win CHL titles in 1996 and 2001 and frequently lead all North American minor league hockey teams in attendance.
***
Much later tonight, I’ll give the whole story of what has turned out to be one crazy, emotional day.

If the CHL isn't economically viable how is the AHL any better? Do they really think thousands more a night will attend what, even though it is a higher level, is still MINOR league hockey?

Sad day hate to see the blazers fold and feel bad for all my friends in OKC who will have to go without hockey except for dharma. You closet hiding thunder hussy!! Guess now you can wear that thunder jersey you begged and pleaded for with pride.

Off season has been a busy one with 2 teams now folding and adding one in Mo.

(unless what I read about the other team that folded isn't so)

With all their players being free agents now and some of them very good, wonder when the song and dance routine will start here.

"We are looking but just can't find that type of player out there" Razz

Because the city will give the AHL team a better lease. And presumably Express Sports won't own 100% of the team. Logic says the (NBA) Thunder would own a cut, and will be able to fold in sponsorships and signage and luxury boxes to their existing customers. Perhaps the (NHL) Oilers would own a cut too. I reckon attendance could - and possibly will - drop by 1/4 to 1/3 and still work out for them. It's pretty simple really -would you rather sell a $10 ticket, $5 worth of parking and $5 worth of food and beer to 5000 fans or just a ticket to 7,500 fans?

But attendance could also go up if they keep it cheap and are able to reach new fans.

Really, the Blazers were doomed the minute that arena got built IMO, I still strongly believe the end of their on-ice dominance coincides with that move for good reason, This was no longer a franchise that could buy its superstar a boat. The CHL played a role in that as well of course, as the Blazers became just another team trying to keep up with the two franchises that had the most success while cashing in on control of their own arenas.

Probably the same hockey team you won't be watching.

What are you going to do to supplement your income now, not being able to take pictures of the Blazers?

To bad the wife and daughter already ate their way out of hooking or there would be a great opportunity there. Although some do prefer that style.

Maybe if you took more photographs of the product on the ice, rather than the inbreds sitting in the ford center all the time, you would make a little money....

oh ya...Go blazers!
