WTF does that mean? Do teams lose rights in the summer? That's not how it used to work. I've seen teams hold on to players' right even into the season.

not if they sign a contract for multiple years and those years expire

Yes, if a player is offered a qualifying contract and they don't take it, the team reatains the rights to that player for the whole season.

Well if that's the case then he's NOT really a free agent right? A team would have to offer a trade for him if Thunder hold his rights.

If the offer is on paper he's Thunder property. If it was a verbal offer, he's free.

My bet is that there was nothing on paper or if there was it wasn't ceritified mail to Clayton or notarized to show it was submitted to him for signing.

I bet we really don't know how the process works now given that the PHPA is in the mix. How does that affect things now?

The only problem I have with this is they've prety much wrapped up Dud-a, but don't try for Clayton? If the team was only going to bring one of these guys back, I don't think I'd want Sir "BreaksAlot". I'd rather have a guy that can last all season.

But good luck to Clayts. Hope he finally gets farther than a round into the playoffs with his new team.

Business as usual until the league and union come up with an agreement.

Either they forgot to file some paperwork, which would be pretty stupid, or they just figured after all the years he'd played for them, they'd give him the courtesy of being able to write his own ticket within the league. The return on these kind of trades - vet status, high salary and someone who still has the ability to just leave for another league - is usually low enough that it's probably not that big a deal.

Clayton gave a lot to the team. I wish him the best of luck.

Hopefully this will work out best for both parties.
