Detroit Cougars USHL

Anybody hear anything about this Detroit Cougars team that is trying to get in the USHL next year? I guess someones trying to put this team in Fraser, MI right outside Detroit at the Great Lakes Sports City Ice Arena, where the Motor City Mechanics played?

Supposed to be a pretty nice bowl seat rink, with seating of up to 4,000 and nice press box with suites and a full bar and everything in the rink, all due to the Motor City Mechanics... but since their not around anymore, its up for grabs...

anybody hear anything about this team?

There was an effort to move the Ohio Junior Blue Jackets there earlier this summer, but the USHL denied the move because it came too close to the draft and didn't allow the USHL officials sufficient time to do their due dilligence of the new ownership group. So, this could be that group attempting to get the team placed for 2009.

I heard something like the league is meeting July 30th for ALL teams trying to get into the league etc., and thats when we'll find out if Detroit is allowed or not..

Any thoughts guys? Would you like a team in Detroit or not?

I think a team in Detroit would be great. A team in Michigan or Minnesota would be great for the league.

There was an ownership group ready to go had the OJBJ moved there, so it doesn't surprise me in the least that they are applying for a team for 09.

I think it would be cool if DET had a USHL team, it is a great hockey city. I wonder if they will draw fans with a OHL team, Pro team in the same market. Should be interesting, and I really hope they put a team in. The Spits may not be happy.

I also hope they come up with a different name, Detroit Cougars does not sound like a USHL team does it? How about a naming contest for the board.

How about the Detroit Drive?

They also have a NAHL team there. Who knows. MI is a good place for hockey.

I'd love to get a team in Michigan, but man, there has to be a place with a little less competition for your entertainment dollar that is willing to house a USHL team.

Look what you found? A cheap-ass under construction page, with a funky looking gothic D.

A child could do that. And probably did.

Don't mean nuthin' and sure as heck doesn't mean someone's trying to float a USHL team.

Detroit USHL......

Yeah, just because someone found a web page don't mean nothin'. Yeah, could easily have been the work of some kid! Hell, we already got a kid posting on this site. Goes by the name of Jrhockeyfan.

And for the record, a USHL team in any available arena in the metro would be an enormous mistake.

I do not disagree Marc, but just wondering why you think that. What is your prospective on the subject?

It could have to do with the 76 other hockey options in the area and a struggling economy.

Ryan pretty well nailed it. Despite living in Texas I maintain strong ties to the Detroit area. I thought it was bad when I lived there 20 years ago, but it's gone downhill since.

Heck just look at the Red Wings. Their attendance in 2007-08 was down over 1,100 over the previous season... and I suspect the Cup run will have no impact on this coming season's numbers.
