Dont play with strange balls

Street Hockey Ball Explodes In Fairhaven
(CBS4) FAIRHAVEN
Fairhaven Police say a group of kids got quite a scare earlier this week when the tennis ball they were playing with exploded.

Investigators say a group of about ten boys, ages 7 to 14, found the ball in a parking lot off David Drown Boulevard in Fairhaven on Monday afternoon. They took the ball, which was wrapped in blue tape, and used it for a game of street hockey. It exploded when one of the kids struck it with his stick. Fortunately none of the youths were hurt.

One witness described the explosion as a loud bang followed by sparks. Police say the ball contained gunpowder, firecrackers and match heads.

Fairhaven Police Chief Gary Souza is asking all parents to warn their children about playing with strange objects. He says a child could have been injured had he been holding the ball when it detonated.

Detectives would not say if they had any suspects in the case.
