How bout who?
| Quote: | No contest: Dallas' stars don't come out; Detroit's do

DALLAS -- Over? No, I won't say this series is over. That would be rude. Let's just call the Red Wings the presumptive Western Conference nominee.
The Dallas Stars, meanwhile, needn't bother with a concession speech. Their Game 3 performance will do. By the time the Wings had finished their 5-2 victory, I only had one question:
Is that the best that the Stars can bring? Down 2-0, coming home, backs against the ... uh ... boards, is that all they could muster? Fourteen shots in the first two periods? Nothing on the power play? Two goals, including a fluky one?
Astute readers will note that I just asked more than one question. But they all go back to the first one: is that the best Dallas can do?
And if so, what does that say about the Wings?
"I thought after we scored the third goal the game was over," Wings coach Mike Babcock said.
When the Wings scored their third goal, to take a 3-2 lead, there were 28 minutes left. And I don't think Babcock meant that he thought the game was over at the time. But in retrospect, it was over. The Wings added a shorthanded goal by Henrik Zetterberg, who was extraordinary all night, and then another goal by Pavel Datsyuk, who was beyond extraordinary.
"We had the puck in the over period, and when they were on the power play, we still seemed to have the puck," Babcock said.
The Wings limited the Stars to four shots on goal in the third period. Astounding. This game might have summed up the Wings' dominance even more than the sweep of Colorado.
This was the Stars' chance to make it a series. They succeeded, by my calculations, for eight minutes and 44 seconds: 37 seconds between Nicklas Grossman's first-period goal, which tied the game, and Datsyuk's second goal, which gave the Wings the lead again; and eight minutes and seven seconds in the second period, after the Stars tied the game again.
But even that second tie was an accident. A pass caromed off the Wings' Brad Stuart and squirted into the net.
The Wings have now won nine straight playoff games, their longest streak ever in a single postseason. Quick, somebody find a nine-armed octopus.
The Wings played once again without leading playoff scorer Johan Franzen. Didn't matter. They still have the two best forwards in this series: Datsyuk, who notched his first career playoff hat trick, and Zetterberg, who assisted Datsyuk twice and scored a shorthanded goal.
They also have the better goalie.
The Wings' Chris Osgood didn't face many shots, but he had to make more tough saves than he did in Detroit. Most of the time, he came through. Dallas's Marty Turco will probably get heat for another playoff disappointment, and for good reason. But to be fair, even a great Turco performance would not be enough in this series.
The Wings are just too good for this Dallas team. Babcock was right: even when Dallas was on the power play, the Wings had the puck all the time. When Wings forward Tomas Holmstrom went to the penalty box 18 seconds into the third period, and the arena came to life, Zetterberg scored his shorthanded goal.
That gave the Wings a 4-2 lead, and on the overhead screen, they started showing highlights of a Cowboys minicamp. No, I'm kidding. But they might as well have.
"We feel like we're not done yet," Wings captain Nick Lidstrom said. "We have to get that fourth win. They're playing at home, they're going to come out and be a desperate team."
Um, wasn't that supposed to happen Monday?
Soon, the Stars will join the rest of the teams that have been eliminated and try to figure out what needs fixing. That is never fun, as Ron Wilson can attest.
Hours before Game 3, San Jose fired Wilson, essentially for losing to Dallas in the Western Conference semifinals. Tough deal for Wilson: losing to Dallas and getting fired. Of course, the alternative was no fun either: beating Dallas and having to face the Red Wings.
