Kenai River does play on "Olympic" regulation ice. As does the UAA Seawolves and the ECHL Alaska Aces. An advatnage? One can look at both the Seawolves and Aces results at home vs results of the other teams at home. I would have to say it has not been a sizeable advantage.

Big ice caters to faster teams. Playing on smaller ice, gives North American players a serious dis-advantage in International competition. Look no futher then the Olympic results for Canada and the USA since 1956.

USA 2 Gold, 3 Silver, 0 Bronze
Canada 1 Gold, 3 Silver, 2 Bronze

How about the Euros?
Combined 11 Gold, 8 Silver, 12 bronze

One would think that USA Hockey would heavily endorse the construction of more Olympic regulation facilities. It might do wonders for the NHL to have the game opened up a bit more anyway. Can't hit what you can't catch. Would give our talent more space to showcase and develop their individual skills.

The point is well taken, although from 1956 to 1988 the men's hockey was dominated by the Soviet Union and Soviet-dominated Czechoslovakia. In those years it appears they accounted for 7 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze, and you can make the argument they had more going for them then a bigger sheet of ice. If the political system had been different in those countries, perhaps the totals would be more even.

Although even looking at the Olympics since 1992, the first after the fall of the Soviet Union, the Euros still play better. Russia and the Czech Republic are still a presence, but not the same as their predecessors. And most Olympic teams, regardless of country, are now loaded with NHL players.

I would ask the question: do you think the size of the ice matters (yeah, I hear the jokes on that one now), or is it more a mind game to make opponents think it makes a difference?

I think it has more to do with the style of play, and the type of player that Canada and the USA develop. Our players tend to be bigger, and are familar with play on the smaller surface. Euros tend to have a crisper passing game to go along with excellent team speed. We generally have more defined role players, and play a more physical game. Our strengths work well for the smaller surface, as the Euros play on the larger one.

Again, more Olympic sheets, and more teams playing on them, would surely close that gap, and ultimately, be better for our game.

On Stephen's post, yes, I'd agree with that as far as International play goes. But in having two sizes of rinks in U.S. play only--have we gotten to the point where it really makes a difference what size rink is used?

It would do our international play some good, and maybe even our professional game, for a systematic move to oylmpic ice.

Maybe a mandate from the NHL, HockeyCanada, & USA Hockey, that all new facilities/sheets have to be of olympic size. How difficult would it be for the NHL to modify existing buildings? In the end, I think that doing such a thing would be a major step into the right direction in elevating our international level of play. The by-product, maybe a more entertaining brand of game.

JHC! Stop trying to validate him. Wink

But, to answer your question, I don't think it really matters anymore. From what I've seen, the players adapt to whatever ice they're on.

I think it makes a big difference. A team playing on olympic ice will not only select players differently but will adopt a different style of play. As an example if you're the red sox wouldn't you want strong right handed hitters playing at fenway where the left field wall is 309 feet.

I remember talking with a couple of nado dmen a couple of years ago and they said it was almost impossible to stop the bandits on odd man rushes because of the size of the rink and their speed

M,
I do not see anyone trying to validate anything. This conversation is beyond your level of understanding. You are at a level somewhere between a puckbunny and a Mudbugs fan.

WBR,
One thing about GR is that we can beat up on eachother without taking it seriously. I wish you would get off of M's family ties and just focus on her. Is she a nice person? Well, she is M. What can I say, kind of llike that annoying cousin that you just can't stand. But to tell you the truth, I'd miss the little #@%$> if she was not here. I do not want anyone bringing my kids into the war of words, and really do not appreciate you doing it to her.

BTW, pucks are flying my friend. You will have more then your fair share of something to bitch about soon enough. Your coach is a tool, I am sure he will find a way to tinker with his team enough to self-destruct by the end of the season....again.

SH, this is not your fight. Why get involved into something that is not yours to begin with? Lately, you've been getting involved in every fight there is. Are you just bored all the time?

Her family ties??? Show me ONE post where I bashed her family.

Thats ALL she does....constantly beating down other posters instead of posting hockey talks. And this is coming from a "career Marines" daughter????? Yeah, I see all kinds of problems with that.

If you wanna go join Flo in a gay parade, knock yourself out!!!!

Thanx for the support, guys, even the backhanded one from Heis. But, it's useless. Shit for brains will never admit nor recognize fault in any of this.

Btw, cowshit, in case you haven't noticed, you are the ONLY one to catch crap from me. Even Lloyd and I get along now. Maybe you should take a page from his book.

Hockey talk?! When have you ever discussed hockey, with the exception of your first post urging the Suckholes' fans to support WF last season b/c Frisco was horrible?
