Thunder Thanks Tulsa

Cooper and Kelly Power Thunder Past OilersPosted on February 3, 2010 in PressReleases
TULSA, OK- The Wichita Thunder defeated the Tulsa Oilers 4-2 at the BOK Center on Tuesday night.

Steve Makway and Paul Kelly helped the Thunder take a 1-0 lead at 8:05 in the first. Goaltender Trevor Cann saved Makway's shot from the point but provided a rebound for Kelly whose initial shot was again saved. Kelly got to the second rebound and took a backhand shot from over the goal line that banked off the back of Cann's left pad and into the net. It marked the third straight game Kelly scored head-to-head against his former team.

Wichita retained its lead through the second, with the two teams trading goals. Tulsa tied it on a shot from the right point by Troy Riddle that hit Scott Campbell's pads before bouncing into the net at 10:15. The Thunder regained the lead at 15:40 in the period on a power play goal from Kevin Cooper. Paul Kelly took a shot from the right half wall that Cooper, positioned at the top of the crease, was able to redirect past Cann's left. Scott Campbell rescued the Thunder late in the period, making a clean glove save on Dan Reidel's open slap shot from point blank range with just 19 seconds left in the frame.

The teams yet again traded goals in the third, this time scoring just eight seconds apart. Kevin Cooper skated along the perimeter of the crease and beat Trevor Cann with a backhand shot to his left on a five-on-three power play to make it 3-1 at 2:03. The Oilers trimmed the lead though eight seconds later when Troy Riddle took advantage of a misplayed puck outside the Thunder net and popped it in for a shorthanded goal. Wichita's defense stepped up through the thick of the third, keeping the Oilers scoreless the rest of the way during the only period in which the Thunder was outshot. Steve Makway iced the game with an empty net goal, shot from deep inside his own end to make it 4-2 with 16 seconds left.

Campbell saved 31 of 33 to earn the win, while Cann allowed three goals on 36 shots in the loss. Cooper was joined by Paul Kelly, who had a goal and two assists, and Steve Makway, who had a goal and an assist as Thunder players who finished with multiple points. Wichita went 2 for 12 on the power play and 5 for 5 on the penalty kill. Wichita is 15 for its last 15 on the penalty kill versus Tulsa.

The Thunder heads to Bossier City on Friday to take on the Mudbugs at 7:05 p.m. All the action can be heard live worldwide at www.wichitathunder.com and www.allinbroadcasting.com Wichita's next home game is Wednesday, February 12th versus Colorado. For tickets, call the Thunder office at (316) 264-GOAL.

Tulsa is Wichita's whipin boy...for what it is worth. I honestly don't know what the season record between the two is but any team we have beaten three times falls into the whipin boy category.

FYI - Wichita is 3-5-1 against Tulsa and 2-27-2 against the rest of the CHL (1 win against Arizona, 1 win against Mississippi, 1 OTL to Colorado and 1 OTL to Missouri).

Wichita has played 20% of its games against Tulsa this year, and has acquired 54% of its points in those games.

54% of our points from one team in considered domination for this year.

Thanks for the heavy lifting on this project Kev although a pie chart would a been a little more effective.

The bad news is we only have one more shot at Tulsa, and it is at home.

I was thinking the same thing. If the oil weren't so shitty, the Blunder would have a total of 2 wins. How embarrasing for the oil to have a team like the Blunder whip their ass. Both teams should have to reapply for admission into the CHl next season. They both play like IHL teams. Very bad hockey!

Wow, this coming from someone who likely hasn't seen either team play from an arena (if it could be called that) that averages what?...2800 a game? With your record? That's IHL hockey right there!
