i didn't say that being drunk or fat couldn't be the result of a lack of character (ie-you). however, to believe that all people who overdrink or overeat (etc) do that because of a character defect is just wrong. further, to believe that there are no psychological/chemical/etc forces acting upon people that are beyond their control is just ignorant. since both of those beliefs are essential to sterotyping people, though, it isn't surprising that you would have them. like i said in one of my previous posts, fred, you need more mirrors.

you could be right. racism is definitely a flaw in cognitive functioning. we see that time after time when you talk about discriminating against minorities and then complain endlessly about the problems your racism causes. if we could treat that racism, it would save us a LOT of $ and prevent a LOT of problems in the future. maybe your wife should start a clinic. you could be her "before and after" success story.

What the heck does weak willed people have to do with racism? Everytime a person can't control their impulses, it doesn't mean they have a disease. Unless of course you would agree that being addicted to poking hairy butts is a disease.

being addicted to sex, homosexual or otherwise, is a disease. the same as being addicted to alcohol, gambling, tobacco and, yes, even chocolate. having sex because one is weak willed is an entirely different matter. i am definitely not a sex addict, but i have had sex when it really wasn't the best thing to do. what is most perplexing here, though, is not those issues. what is most puzzling is that when you proposed that racism be considered as a disease and i agreed with you, you immediately began to argue against your very own assertions. like i mentioned earlier, the serious symtoms of cognitive dissonance that your racism and other bigotries create might very well be found in the dsm.

Couldn't do it. I am not powerless over anything. If I don't want another beer, I don't have one. I have rented to a darkie before. I don't see the hairy butt thing having any power over me either.

As much as I Hate to disagree with you, Fred...... I really believe there are such a thing as Addictions. Its hard to explain. As much as I Love to hear people such as yourself espose the Virtures of Strong Resolve, Self-Discipline, and Willpower, they just don't seem to fare very well here.

If you are truly an Addict, you CAN Willpower yourself away from Booze. But, not after you've had the first one. You have the first one, and I don't know. It just triggers something. Its weird. For an Alcoholic, having that first drink and their thought process is like yours might be after you've had 20 drinks.

Here's another weird thing about it. Say someone was a full blown Alcoholic who had been continuosly drunk for 20 years. Physically beat up, broken down, liver about to give out.

Then the Guy was Sober, not a drop for 20 years.

If he starts drinking again, he don't get to start over. After a couple of weeks he'll be back to about as bad as he was when quit after 20 years. I don't really understand it. But, thats pretty common.

I agree with everything you said. But it is a character flaw not a disease that makes people that way. I do respect people who realize they have this flaw and stay away from the problem.

that is exactly how it is...their is no starting over for an alcoholic no matter how long they been sober. After taking that first drink they are headed right back down the path where they were so long ago.

I've known folks just like that been sober over 20 years and for some odd reason they take that first drink. It wasn't pretty watching them slowly die. And THEY DID in time.
